Certification of public documents for use abroad (notarisation)

WHAT

The certification of a public document certifies that the document is identical.

If you want to use documents issued by foreign public authorities in Slovania, you must first certify them in a process of certification.

This process does not apply to countries signatories to Hague Convention and countries signatories to the Agreement on Mutual Recognition in relation to documents not requiring certification. The list of the Hague Apostille Member Countries can be found here (in English): http://www.internationalapostille.com/hague-apostille-member-countries/

HOW

If you wish to use an official document issued by another country in Slovenia, the document must first be certified by a competent authority in the foreign country. The competent authorities and the certification process vary between countries, therefore you should inquire about the specific certification process used in your country.

When you have done that, submit the document to the Representation of the Republic of Slovenia in your country where it will be certified by them. If you are already in Slovenia, submit the document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Good to know

The certification process varies between countries and can take a long time. Make sure that you begin the process early enough.

WHERE

Begin the process with the competent authority in your country of origin. If you are already in Slovenia, inquire about the competent authority at your embassy.
