The employer must enter you into the compulsory insurance scheme on the day you start your employment.

The contract for services is concluded when you are hired to perform a specific work or service. The scope of work, the period of completion of the work, number of hours per week, shifts and other details (quality/quantity of the work, service or product delivered) are defined in the contract. Personal supplementary work

WHAT

If you want to perform occasional work, such as help with household work or craft activity, you can register your personal supplementary work at the administrative unit. You can perform personal supplementary work if you are regularly employed, unemployed, retired or a student. If you are not a Slovenian citizen, you are allowed to perform personal supplementary work only if you have free access to the labour market.
Before you start, you are required to buy a so-called voucher (vrednotnica) either for yourself or your customer at the administrative unit. The voucher is valid for one month and can be issued for the current or the following month.
The half-year income generated with personal supplementary work must not exceed the amount of three average salaries in Slovenia, based on the average salary of the previous calendar year.

Student work

WHAT

During your education in Slovenia, you can perform temporary student work or part-time student work. You can perform student work if you are 15 years old or older and enrolled in secondary or higher education programme. If you are a citizen of an EU member country or non-EU member country, you can perform student work if you are studying in Slovenia or are included in international student exchange programme. You must also meet the following requirements:

  • A valid personal document
  • Slovenian bank account
  • Slovenian VAT ID number
  • Proof of Slovenian student status – certificate of enrollment in a faculty or university in Slovenia.

You must first register at the Student Work Service (študentski servis), where you can look through student work advertisements. You must be employed based on a special type of contract called referral form or referral (napotnica). Referrals are issued by the Student Work Service. There are over 25 different student work services in Slovenia.
As a student, you have the same rights as other employees (holidays, leave/vacation, a maximum number of permitted work hours per day). You are also ensured within the pension and disability insurance system which means that your student work is calculated into your pensionable service and entered into the pension and disability insurance records. Your employer must have the required insurance against accidents in the workplace.

Seasonal work

WHAT

Seasonal work is temporary and occasional work performed during certain seasons. This form of employment is short-term or time-limited for certain types of work (e.g. agriculture, forestry, tourism, construction). You are a seasonal worker if you are employed for a particular part of work based on a contract (contract of limited duration, contract for services). After the contract expires, you are not entitled to a severance pay, but you can add the period of work to your years of service. Foreigners can perform seasonal work only in the field of agriculture and forestry after having acquired an adequate work permit or single work and residence permit.
